As a passenger do police have right to search

More details to this question:
Driver was pulled over brake lights stayed on. All passengers presented IDs. Driver granted consent to search vehicle. Does this apply to passengers? Forced search revealed paraphernalia on passenger. He was cited. Never gave consent and said items were inside a cigarette pack in pants pocket. Cigarettes could not be mistaken for a weapon. Davidson County Tennessee

The officers do have a right to search a passenger to ensure that the passenger has no weapons on the body. If they find something illegal, then that is valid.
