Can a minor caught shoplifting get a criminal record?

More details to this question:
I recently got caught shoplifting in my local store. I wanted to know if my school will know about what happened. And what will happen to me? Also wanted to know if I get a criminal record, how can I get rid of it?

The school would not be informed of this by the police or the courts. They would not find out about it unless it was by some other independent means. Many jurisdictions offer diversion programs for such offenses that would keep the matter off your public record. If not, you can always apply later to have it expunged.

Yes, if you admit to the charges or the charges are substantiated, then you will have a juvenile record. Most relatively minor crimes, such as shoplifting, are sealed when you become 18, but more serious ones, such as violent crimes, stay on your record until you're at least 30. You will be entitled to a public defender, if you cannot afford an attorney, who will walk you through the process.

In Michigan, anyone that is 17 or older is treated as an adult and gets an adult record if convicted of a crime.
