Can I claim self-defense if needed, also should I call and ask if I've even been charged?

My sister and I got into an argument and she hit me. I hit her back and pushed her away. She called the cops and they said they were going to file simple assault charges. I gave them my information and never heard anything. My sister never dropped the charges to my knowledge. It's been a month. She also isn't going to pursue them.
