Public defnders do get busy and often aren't as good as you might hope in staying in touch. BUT they are very good lawyers that know what they are doing in the criminal courts. The public defenders I know work very hard on their cases and try to get the best possible result for the client - but they often do not have time to keep the client informed at every step of the process. If you fire your public defender, you may end up on your own needing to pay for a lawyer. If you can do that, I am sure there are many lawyers who will be happy to talk to you and work on yoru case.
