Can I get compensated for their Mistake

More details to this question:
For 17 years I was walking around with the wrong charge.I was suppose to have a theft charge and I had the original charge I was arrested for instead.In 1995 I was charge with a bogus charge by the police 2nd degree robbery over a pair of dollar head phones.I couldn't afford proper counsel and the person dropped the charges but the state pick them up.So I plead guilty to a theft even though I was innocent.So I got 1 year probation and I moved away but never went so I got another 2 years probation. I had a total of 3 all together.I finished all that and paid my fines and now I wanted to get an expungement only to find out the courts never down graded my charges and I have been denied jobs and fired behind this.Not to mention paid fines on a charge that didn't exist.I want to know what steps should I take because this is an unjust thing that happened to me.I should have never been charged with a felony just a misdemeanor

i would need to know the precise description of the conviction. if you have a 'robbery' conviction, you cannot have an expungement. was this a 'theft' conviction ? you should try to have the conviction expunged if the conviction can be expunged. this is the most inexpensive way to remove the conviction. if the conviction cannot be expunged, the more expensive and problematic solution is to 're-do' the conviction into another conviction which can be expunged. ed dimon, esq.
