QUESTION

Can I get out of this somehow?

Asked on Feb 12th, 2022 on Criminal Law - Utah
More details to this question:
Last night I was cited for theft. I took down a street sign from a street that no longer exists. Everything in it's proximity is being demolished in a month. I did not think I would be charged for taking something that would have ended up in a landfill.

You can be charged because until it ends up in the landfill it is still the state's property. However, it will likely be a mitigating factor. You should hire and attorney or if you cannot afford one, ask the court to appoint you an attorney right away. Theft charges, even minor ones, can have very serious repercussions on things like employment and housing.
