Can retail theft be expunged and does this show as a conviction?

More details to this question:
My daughter has a retail theft November 2012 charge, paid fine of $400 and 12 month probation completed on January 2014. Most applications ask if convicted of felony and she say no. Is this misdemeanor a conviction showing up on background check?
