QUESTION

Can self defense justify an assault?

Asked on Apr 14th, 2015 on Criminal Law - New York
More details to this question:
I was involved in a bar fight earlier this week. I have never even been in a fight before and do NOT have a criminal record. I didn't even start the fight. One of the guys knocked into me and started assaulting me so of course I hit him back. The cops totally ignored my statements and arrested me anyway. Wasn't this exactly what self-defense is? I need to fight this, I don't want anything on my record.

You have a defense. The police tend to just arrest and let the court system deal with it. Is there surveillance? I have a case right now involving an incident in a club and I got the surveillance which refutes the claim against my client.
