Can they still get in trouble after putting back what they took?

More details to this question:
There were some items placed in a vacuum box through the handle hole in a store. The person who did this was going to buy the vacuum and get the things they placed out of the box at home and then return the vacuum. The person who did this changed their mind and put the vacuum back on the shelf.

The defense is called abandonment. But with Retail fraud the act of concealment is a completed crime without even leaving the store. Coin toss.
