More details to this question:
I cashed a check for some home remodelling work done by my illegal immigrant friend. Now the people he was working for say they are going to sue me for the check because the remodelling work wasn't finished.

Was it his check? Was it made out to you? Did you have anything to do with the remodeling?? If you just cashed a legal check made out to some one else without being part of the underlying contract then you have no liability.

If you are not part of the company and the contract, they cannot sue you simply because you cashed a check.

They can't sue you for cashing a check. But, depending on the terms of your agreement with them, they could sue you for breach of contract. Of course, just because they can sue doesn't necessarily mean they will win. Consult an attorney.
