Could they still charge me for theft if I left?

More details to this question:
I was approached out of the store and asked to come back in. I got in my car and left. Could I still be charged?

Yes, you could be charged. However, it would be hard for them to identify you though unless someone recognized you or they got your car's information. Simply because a person is charged does not mean they will be convicted. The prosecutor must prove any allegations beyond a reasonable doubt. I strongly advise anyone charged with a criminal offense to exercise their right to council and either retain a lawyer or request that the court appoint them a lawyer payable at the public's expense.

Anyone can be charged, it's another matter entirely if your guilt can be proved beyond a reasonable doubt.

If they can show proof that you stole something, then yes. I.E. a video tape.

If a person is suspected of shop lifting, then reasonable steps can be take to detain the person. If the person is not detained, they could still be charged with shop lifting. It would be a matter of proving the offense as to whether there is enough to go forward or be convicted.
