More details to this question:
I was accused of stealing at work. The loss prevention agent said there was an open investigation. He typed up a statement that I did not sign; I did not sign any documents nor were the police called. I took my belongings and left the premises. Do I need to get a lawyer?

While it would be better if you hired an attorney, if your money is tight then do not hire one now. However, do not talk with anyone about the situation. If you are charged, do not talk with the police or anybody else and immediately hire a private attorney.
