QUESTION

Does it still count if I haven’t exited the store all the way?

Asked on Jan 25th, 2017 on Criminal Law - New York
More details to this question:
I didn’t pass the EAS tower, but my friend did. We were caught and told to empty our pockets. I emptied my pockets but I wasn’t caught outside of the store. I’m 16 and can't afford a lawyer.

I assume that you are asking about shoplifting. It doesn't matter if you had not left the store. Putting whatever it was in your pocket is inconsistent with the store's ownership of the item until you paid for it. I suggest that you let your parents or guardian know about this as you need a good criminal defense lawyer.
