QUESTION

Does my probation start after my release date or my sentencing date?

Asked on Jan 17th, 2012 on Criminal Law - Maryland
More details to this question:
May 2008, I was sentenced. 5 years all suspended but 18 months, served locally. Along with 5 years probation, to my understanding it is after a sentencing that a probation period begins. However on my commitment papers is written probation begins upon release. Do I stick with my release date as my start of probation or my sentencing date?

In Maryland a local sentence is anything less than 12 months I believe. So the fact that you got an 18 month local sentence is surprising to me. However, to answer your question probation does not begin until after your release date.
