Doesn’t he have the right to have an independent lab test done?

My friend was arrested for meth possession. It was a small bag and it only had residue in it. He wants to request an independent lab test. His attorney doesn't seem to want to do that. My friend feels that there will not be enough in the bag to do another test.

If there will not be enough in the bag to do the test, so what's the issue? Also, the test result could likely seal his fate.
