QUESTION

Grand Jury Duty

Asked on Jun 20th, 2014 on Criminal Law - New Jersey
More details to this question:
I have received a summon to serve at a grand jury at Superior Court of New Jersey at Trenton, NJ for once a day for 20 weeks. I would really appreciate the answer to the following 1- Is there a selection process for the grand jury or pretty much everyone who is called serves? 2- What are usually the hours of attendance? 3- My employer only pays 40 hours a year for Jury Duty. Can I appeal the court to excuse me beyond 40 hours? Many thanks

No - not everyone who gets called served.  If you only get paid for 40 hours, tell the judge that when you go to the first day of jury duty.  tell the judge you cannot serve without getting paid.  the actual hours of service depend on whether or not you get selected, and for what jury.  Mostly the courts do not want someone on the jury who does not want to serve, so if you don't or can't becaus eof your job, you will find the court staff to be sympathetic to that.
