QUESTION

How do I deal with this Desk Appearance Ticket?

Asked on Jun 29th, 2015 on Drug Crimes - New York
More details to this question:
I am 18 years old in New York City and I was arrested last night for smoking a small amount of marijuana. I was brought in by the police and I was processed (fingerprints, photo, etc). I was given a paper to sign about my DAT and was then allowed to leave. I do not remember any information about from it, such as when I am supposed to show up to court. Was there a document I was supposed to receive? Also, I am currently unemployed and I have never worked before. But I am expecting work within the next 3 months. I am a dependent since I am currently living with my family. Will these hinder my ability to hire a lawyer?

You should have received what is called a Desk Appearance ticket, which would provide you with certain details, including the date you need to appear in court and the place and time you need to appear in court.  You can call the clerk's office to see if they can assist you in figuring out the date you need to appear in court.  If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be supplied to you free of cost.  However, if you still want to retain an attorney, then you can consult with an attorney who could provide a payment plan.
