I have been trying to reach my public defender for over a week about my case on Monday morning and I can't. I have received money to pay for a good lawyer to defend me. I would only be asking to postpone my preliminary for two weeks at the most. Is this allowed?

Ask your new lawyer. Continuances are granted liberally when one hires a new attorney. Why isn't the new attorney handling the continuance for you?
