More details to this question:
My brother passed away in March and his wife was interviewed in the back of two police patrol cars. The case was closed 3 weeks later. I'm told by the city attorney (and detective on the case) that I cannot get a copy of the videos and audios of my former sister-in-law's interviews. Is this correct? I'm a paralegal but I cannot find any criminal code that says I cannot receive a copy. I've gotten the autopsy, police reports, detective reports, etc. Some help would be great appreciated! I'm in another state so I cannot go to the DA's or City Attorney's office. Thank you!
Try a Chapter 13 public data request. Address it to the city's public records official. Then if they want to deny your request, they have to give you a legal reason that the data is classified as private or confidential. Overall I would suggest retaining an attorney to advise you as to your particular circumstances.
