You should Google lawyers and check Avvo and Law QA for criminal lawyers in your area. Search or "criminal lawyer" and look at their websites. You should see if they specialize in only criminal cases, have at least 20 years experience, offer a free consultation, and have good reviews on Avvo and Google. Then you meet with your top 5 choices and ask for a "flat rate fee" if possible. You should ask howe many gun cases they have handled in the last year and if they have tried them before. Never retain a lawyer who has not handled many cases like the one you have and taken several to trial as theat is a sign hey do not practice a lot of felony level criminal law cases. Most people are very unsophisticated and never research lawyers, ask questions, or check Avvo to see that htey have no disciplinary record or history of misconduct. If he is between an 8.0 and 10.0 "superb" or "excellent" rating on Avvo and you see that he does at least 50% criminal law cases on his profile hen he is probably a very good criminal lawyer. Most people just ask a lawyer how much he charges and hire the least expensive one which is a very poor way to pick a stock, a doctor, or a lawyer.

You should speak to a couple criminal defense attorneys in your area. Ask them questions about how they would handle the case, and get an idea about them personally. Are they going to handle your case directly or pawn it off to another attorney that you never met before. That is always a good start.

You're better off focusing on attorneys who are experienced with juvenile criminal defense. Ask the attorneys what their experience is in juvenile court. Ask what defenses might be available to use in your son's case. Hire the attorney that has good reviews online and that you have confidence in.

You son's future has been in his hands and will remain so. He has not done a good job of taking care of it and therefore needs a good attorney to hopefully minimize the damages he has caused himself. You want an experienced criminal attorney from the area he is being prosecuted in.
