QUESTION

How long can the police keep my car?

Asked on May 20th, 2014 on Criminal Law - Connecticut
More details to this question:
The police are investigating my friend for murder & he had my car that night. They now have my car & won't give it back to me. My friend hasn't been arrested probably because they can't find him. They told me they are keeping it for evidence. I knew nothing of the crime & still don't know what is going on. Can I get a lawyer to expedite me getting my car back?

That is a difficult question to answer. The fact that your car was potentially used in a murder makes the situation more complicated. The police are able to keep the car for a reasonable amount of time for examination and preservation of evidence. How long that may be depends on the facts. You should speak to an attorney to find out your rights and more about the situation in order to answer this question.
