How long does it takes for a petty theft to be off my record?

More details to this question:
I've gotten a misdemeanor of petty theft. I was 18 when I was charged with shoplifting. Learned my lesson! It’s been 2 years since this incident happened. I was also planning on filing for citizenship. What would my next step be? Should I apply yet?

The petty theft is never off of your record. You will be required to answer questions about it to any federal, state, or other governmental organization. The immigration officials will be able to access the conviction. Talk with an immigration lawyer.
