You need to get a lawyer and see about working out a deal in order to keep a conviction for theft off your record. It is not the fine that is the worst punishment? or consequence. it is the conviction on your record. This conviction will stay on your record forever. You will make yourself unemployable. What employer wants to hire a thief.

Instead of worrying about the fine, you need to focus your attention on how you can avoid being convicted. Petty theft is a crime of moral turpitude, and if convicted you can kiss your career aspirations goodbye. Hire a lawyer before you get duped into a plea you will regret for life.

In Washington, you likely will be sentenced to attend a consumer awareness class, do community service, pay a fine, pay restitution, stay away from the store and be on probation for one year. You will also have to pay a civil fine to the store.

You should not be worried about the fine. You should be worried about keeping a crime of moral turpitude off your record. A class B misdemeanor is punishable by up to a 2000 dollar fine and 180 days in jail. Assuming this is your first criminal charge, it will not be even close to a 2000 dollar fine.
