How would this fingerprinting for shoplifting affect my life?

More details to this question:
A few years ago, I was in a desperate place, with no money and a young child. I acted hastily and stole deli from a store so that I'd have something to make my son for lunch that week. I was caught, handcuffed in the back of store, put in the back of a police car and fingerprinted at the station. The whole scenario seems surreal now. All of this is for $42 worth of food. I had never done anything like this but then again. I had never been in such a desperate situation. I couldn't afford an attorney, and one was not assigned to me because it was not a felony. I wanted to speak to the judge face to face because I was mortified at what I had done. I was a mother, a freelance writer, looking to get out of the field and go back to work. I admitted what I had done, was brutally honest with the judge, and just about lost it. I was very emotional about my son, about how embarrassed I was about what I did. This is not the person I am, nor do I want to be. The judge wanted to give me a chance to get back on track. She told me that if I do this one day course and bring back the certificate, she'll waive all court fees and dismiss the case. The problem is that I was fingerprinted so even though she dismissed the case and I wasn't convicted, doesn't this mean, if someone does a background check on me, it will show that I was arrested?
If you were fingerprinted and photographed for a retail theft offense, you were arrested even if it was done by summons (mail). Even if the charges were dismissed there remains the records of your arrest. Because the charges were dismissed, you have the right to petition the court to expunge (destroy) those records. In some counties, people can do this on their own, in other counties (like Allegheny), the assistance of a lawyer is advised.
