My boyfriend at the time was helping me out with paying my utility bill. I was not aware of at the time that he was using a credit card that did not belong to him to pay it. I was an employee of a college in FL and the card he used belonged to a person who had a child attend that same university at some point in time. I did not know of the fraud until I returned home one day and my utilities were disconnected and I was told I would need to pay the bill in full due to fraud. When I tried to contact him I could not find him and he would not answer my calls. Just recently after meeting with an attorney we found out he was in jail in another state for the exact same thing. This information was given to the detective and DA but they said they were not concerned about him they were going after me. I have no criminal record and I had no knowledge of any wrong doing by my ex. I can't have a felony on my record. I worked hard for my degree and I am a single parent who needs to support my child
I could not determine what your question is. However, it seems as if you may be wondering if you need legal assistance since you are innocent. In my opinion, you should not assume that, because you are innocent, the case will just go away. Even innocent people can, and do, get convicted.
If you cannot afford to retain a private attorney, you need to ask the court to appoint the Public Defender to represent you.
If the court/clerk of court determines that you have sufficient funds with which to hire an attorney, the Public Defender's Office will not be appointed to handle your case. In that event, if you want legal representation, you would need to retain private counsel.
