More details to this question:
I was granted an expungement in the state of New Jersey. I was thinking about applying for a gun permit. Is that an option? Will anything show up on a Federal background check?

If the arrest and/or conviction was properly expunged and this conveyed to the record keeping entities, i.e. National Crime Information Center (NCIC) it should not show up on the background check.
