Hello, im from NY and took a family vacation to virginia. I was pulled over by virginia state police for speeding going 100/55 zone. Honestly it was around 5:30 a.m. it was fairly dark barely cars on the road and didnt realize i was going so fast. Ive had my license for 13 years Clean never been pulled over not even a parking ticket. Im a NYC Paramedic with no criminal background. I have to appear in court for reckless driving and honestly im afraid because jail time is considered. Good family background and my family needs me. If i dont appear in court in virginia what would happen? Thank you for your time
Because this is a traffic misdemeanor and, as you said, you could face potential jail time, you definitely want to have a lawyer represent you to make sure your rights are protected and that you get the best possible deal. If you just don't show up, you could end up with a Failure to Appear - a separate offense - on your record, as well. Unfortunately, this type of offense cannot simply be prepaid like a speeding ticket, so you will have to attend court. Honestly, as fast as you were going, you can probably count on a few nights in jail, so be prepared for that and just face the music and get it over with. You do not want to be a fugitive from justice.
