is a dlat rate better or an hourly rate?

More details to this question:
I have two charges against me right now with one being a felony and the other a misdemeanor. So I am wondering if being charged a flat fee or hourly rate is better?

If i was the client, i would prefer flat fee as i know what i am paying. However, if you know your lawyer and he is fair, the hourly rate may work.
