is it legal to record face-to-face conversations?

More details to this question:
i was in a meeting with my Human Resource director and was being called out for actions which HR claimed were stalking, which HR knew was not. I recorded the conversation for future use.

IN VIRGINIA, so long as you are a party to a conversation you may record it unbeknownst to the other party and this is not illegal.
This could vary differently and drastically across different states/jurisdictions.
