QUESTION

Is their a lottery scam going around?

Asked on Jan 12th, 2013 on Criminal Law - Georgia
More details to this question:
My husband received a check in the mail for $3,980, said he had won $150,000. He should deposit the check and call them and they would send the winnings, also would tell him where to send $1,995 to pay taxes on the winning. $1,995 should be taken from the $3,980 after deposit in his checking acct. Sound like a scam to me.

It is they are trying to get the taxes from him. Legitimate lotteries just deduct the taxes from the winnings and send them to the government. They do not ask for money. The check will bounce if deposited.

Sounds like a variation of the "Nigerian Scam" which is prevalent on the internet.

I do not know if there are any scams like this going around. But the attorney general of the state probably does know about these things. Contact them

It is a scam, the check has the right account number and name, but the information was fraudulently obtained. When you cash the check, you are responsible for the amount. Most of these people are living in China or Africa but they setup an address in Canada or other places. They disappear as soon as they receive the money from you, and you will be liable for entire amount. I believe FBI has a special department to handle these kind of scams.

That is a SCAM. That check is NO GOOD. They want him to deposit it and send them a check which will bounce but they may have already withdrawn the funds. Do NOT do anything but report it to the police!

Of course it's a scam. Lotteries are illegal in Utah, anyway.
