Is there any way that Grand Theft Auto Misdemeanor charge can be changed or the charges can be lowered?

More details to this question:
My boyfriend was charged with Grand Theft Auto as a Misdemeanor. Three to four months ago, his mother provided him with a truck to move out of state. Once he had arrived, he asked his friend if she wanted his truck as he couldn't make payments on it. She graciously accepted, all he asked for in return was the $100-$200 payment that his mother had already placed on the truck. She didn't give it to him. On the morning of his arrest, he returned to his home state and went to his mother's house where she asked about the truck. He said that the truck had been stolen shortly after he had arrived in the other state. He told his mother that he knew where the truck was and that he would attempt to get it back. His mother then requested that he stay somewhere else and called her best friend to ask if he could stay there. Her best friend agreed for him stay with her and took him back to her house. Later that night, his mom called her friend and said that she had two options. She could take her son to the police station or she was calling the cops. Her friend refused to betray his trust and waited for the cops to arrive. Around 9:00 pm, he was arrested. Could it possibly be charged as petty theft because his mom is not concerned with the truck itself but only wants the payment that she placed on it? He is 18 years old, Court date is January 29th at 9:00 am.
Without knowing more, anything is possible. The charges could be withdrawn, the charges could be reduced to Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, a misdemeanor, or even a summary Disorderly Conduct. Have him get an attorney to work this weird family matter, albeit criminal, out between your boyfriend and his mom.
