QUESTION

My 17 year old stepson plans to attack me today at the therapists office

Asked on Apr 10th, 2014 on Criminal Law - New Jersey
More details to this question:
17 Yr old stepson is violent and abusive to his mother. Punches himself in the face and bashes his head and face into walls (knocking himself out). He is a drug addict (pot and pills). Will I need a lawyer when I defend myself today? Is his mother under lawful obligation to notify the therapist of the threat? This is our first appointment and I believe 100% he will follow through with his threat.

you should notify the therapist, and she may want to call the police.  The doctor/patient confidentiality is a lot like attorney/client in that anytime a patient or client is threatening harm to self or others, you can report that.  I would definitely tell the therapist, and indicate that you believe that he will go through with this threat, and ask what to do if he does attack.
