QUESTION

My ex-girlfriend assaulted me two weeks ago. Can I still press charges?

Asked on May 22nd, 2013 on Criminal Law - District of Columbia
More details to this question:
My ex-girlfriend assaulted me cutting my nose in the process. I declined an ambulance and did not press charges. Photos were taken by the police. My reason for not pressing charges was because she was previously convicted of assault with deadly weapon. I was concerned for me and my mother’s safety. It has been two weeks.

Yes you can go to the police and tell them that you want to press charges and then it is up to them if the case goes forward.

In the district of Columbia or in the State of Maryland you can pursue a temporary protection order which can be converted into a civil protection order (1 year). No you would not be barred by the 2 weeks lapse of time.
