Once sentenced to life in prison, can you get another court date for a lesser crime?

Once being sentenced to life without the possibility of parole, can you get back in court to get a lesser sentence if you been in for 9 years? He had a public defender and he didn’t represent his case successfully, so he wants to get his case back into court to get a lesser charge.

Once sentenced to life in prison, there is nothing else you can do to get a lesser sentence.
