What advantage does a private attorney have over a public attorney?

More details to this question:
My legal age son (20) mailed his friend (Washington to Montana) a 1/4 of pot and was caught. Should I let him roll his dice with the public attorney or should I assist him and find the money for private counsel?

You shouldn't be stating that your son "did" anything. Your son is accused.

Private attorneys have a much more manageable caseload and oftentimes get better results since they have more time to spend on their cases.
