What can I do if am being threatened with slander?

Asked on Feb 02nd, 2012 on Criminal Law - Florida
More details to this question:
I am a professional pilot and someone is threatening to make slanderous complaints to the FAA if I ever talk to his ex wife again, who is an old friend of mine. His hope is to destroy my career. Is this a criminal offense? Should I file a report with local law enforcement? Does the fact that I am an aviation professional make these threats a Federal offense? The person making the threats is in TX and I am in FL.

Giving false information to a federal agency could be considered a federal offense depending on the agency; however it would be an issue for law enforcement. Slander is a form of defamation which is a civil offense which requires a false statement (known to be false) that is communicated to a third party and which causes damage to the subject of the remarks. The practical part of all this is that from a civil ligation point, you should only sue if the defendant is collectible and you only sue on principle when you have the money to pay for the fight.
