What can I do if I found a purse, returned it the police department but the money is missing?

More details to this question:
I found a purse at a Walmart parking lot, looked through it search for a phone number or cell. Didn't find any, so I took it to the police station to have it returned to the owner. At the police station I didn’t want to provide my information given that I just wanted to turn the purse in. Later that evening two officers showed up at home asking me questions because owner said $80 or $90 were missing. I'm currently applying for a bank job, so I don’t want anything negative showing in my non-existent record. I told the officers that I would give her the money, but that I didn’t take it. Later one officer called and asked me to come into the station next day to return the money and charges will not be filed. My question is, will there be any record if there wasn't an arrest or charges filed? I believe just giving her the $80 or $90 is cheaper than hiring an attorney.
If you are neither arrested and/or charge, there will be no criminal record. If you can trust the officers, they likely will live up to their promise and not file.
