What can I do to get a job within my Education major.

I made a mistake and got arrested for theft by shop lifting. It was a felony but dropped to a misdemeanor. My public defense attorney told the judge this was my first offence. The judge told him if I pled guilty he would drop it from a felony to a misdemeanor. And it shows on my criminal back ground. That is was a felony but then a misdemeanor. Though my name is spelled incorrectly on my rap sheet. I graduate from college with an education degree but with a background I cannot get.hired. I am not a thief just a college student who made a mistake. I returned the product to the store. What can I do?!? Please help. Please! I really love teaching. Do I have a chance to erase my background or to have it sealed?
