More details to this question:
Three of my friends and I were in a car that smelled of weed. We hit a checkpoint, they said our car smelled, and my friends caved and admitted to having it. Myself and one other friend had about a gram each on us, plus pipes we'd used to smoke weed previously. This was confiscated.they took us into a parking lot and questioned us. They gave the driver a series of sobriety tests. He failed and was handcuffed. As for myself and the friend who had marijuana, we were pulled aside and basically told that we could have our charges dropped if we helped the police by giving up our dealers. I told them my friend gave me (not sold me) the weed I had and that I didn’t know any other dealers. There’s no way in hell I'd become an informant under any circumstances. My friend also refused the offer. The cop told us both he'd give us the weekend to think it over and be in touch on Monday. What should we expect? If I stick to my story is there a chance he won't press charges? When he asks me should I pretend to start crying to stir up his sympathy, or make up some story about how I only smoke once in a blue moon and I never want to again because it’s not worth it and I’m oh so sorry?
You really need to talk the entire situation over with a lawyer. You may have a probable cause or other defense. Even if you do not have a defense, as a first timer, you most likely can receive a first timer's diversionary program that will allow you to get out of this with no record. Talk to your attorney about "cooperating" with the police. I doubt if he or she will think it is advisable.
