QUESTION

What do I do when a town cop blackmailed me to give him information?

Asked on May 16th, 2013 on Criminal Law - New Mexico
More details to this question:
Because I didn't want to give him information, a cop wrote me a false citation saying that if I then cooperated he would recommend the ticket be dropped by county attorney. I don't trust talking to any kind of legal help or the county attorney in this small town. I believe the conversation was recorded in his police car.

It is wise to not trust the county attorney or local law enforcement in this case. Small towns in New Mexico can be very tight knit and in my experience, the small town police departments are full of corruption. If this officer is trying to force you to testify in court, you need to seek immediate legal help. I would suggest someone with civil rights and criminal defense experience. You do not want to lie under oath because that could potentially lead to perjury charges against you.
