What happens after one takes a plea before the court ?

More details to this question:
After pleading guilty to a misdemeanor in an arranged plea, one then has to go for sentencing on another date. when is one sent to a probation for evaluation? Is one sent to probation for evaluation before or after sentencing? this is for a class E misdemeanor.

Before. Probation needs to prepare a pre-sentence report
