What is a P.I. bond and why would someone qualify for it?

More details to this question:
They were released on their own free will for no money, and no bondsman required. Apparently, the correctional officer walked in the holding tank and told the group that some of us qualify for a P.I. bond, just after being put in a holding cell.

P.R. Personal recognizance. Your promise to return to court is secured only by your word. You do not put up any cash. You can be arrested if you miss court and authorities later "recognize" you.
