QUESTION

What is adequate disciplinary action for simple assault in college?

Asked on Mar 08th, 2016 on Criminal Law - Tennessee
More details to this question:
I am a junior in college in TN. Last week, my roommate and I got in an argument then she attacked and assaulted me. She grabbed and squeezed the base of my neck, twisted my hands, and scratched my arms. and I requested her to "get her hands off me" 13 times before I pushed her in self defense. She attempted to seize my phone, and block my exit from the room. I recorded much of the attack which proved my innocence and lack of initiation. The dean didn't want me to report it to campus safety immediately so I didn't. But later I did. They submitted the case to the discipline committee. My questions are: What is the standard disciplinary action for an assault like this? Can I as the victim be notified of the disciplinary action taken? (my dean informed me that I couldn't know what actions the discipline committee took)? Can I press charges against her? Can she cover the costs for a diagnosis on my laptop? Can I take out a restraining order on her?

I am not qualified to answer the question of what is adequate discipline by a university for the assault or the disciplinary process, that is totally up to the university. Yes you can take criminal charges out against her for assault and you can seek an order of protection if you wish to.
