QUESTION

What proof can be used to identify a stolen ATV?

More details to this question:
A four wheeler was stolen from us a little over a week ago and we found it in a classifieds section for sale. We are 100% sure that it is ours because we custom painted parts of it and it has certain details that were on ours. There were some parts changed out though, and they were only the ones that we bought so they could sell it as being all stock parts and we would have less proof. The cops went to check it out and said the VIN numbers weren't there so they couldn't prove that it was ours. Apparently telling them all of the things we did to customize it isn't enough either. We don't know what to do because the police said there is pretty much no solid proof that it was the one that was stolen from us but we know. Is there any other way that we could prove that it is ours?

Your problem is that the police and prosecutors, in a criminal action, must have proof beyond a reasonable doubt. The evidence you can provide may be enough for a civil action, but apparently the prosecutor and police officers do not believe it is proof beyond a reasonable doubt. You can institute a civil case for recovery of the ATV, and seek criminal responsibility.
