More details to this question:
Im 19 years old and i was recently taken in for retail fraud of the 3rd degree in michigan. im absolutely terrified as i read up on it and i was wondering if i shouls try to get a lawyer or something. i admitted to it to the police and have a hearing soon. i want to ask for an appointed lawyer but if its based of family income rather than my own i dont think i can get one. im terrified, ill pay any fines i just dont want to have this on my record or receive jail time as i am in college. if possible i also dont want my mother finding out as i think she deserves better than this and id feel awful if i put her through the stress of dealing with this as she deals with enough from me. I was thinking i could plea guilty off the bat and get a reduced sentence as i've never done something like this before and never would again.

Do not "plead guilty off the bat".  Too many times Defendant's want to plead guilty as soon as possible, hoping to "get this overwith". That is rarely a good idea. Which Court is your case in and when do you have Court?
