QUESTION

What should I do if I got caught with marijuana?

Asked on Jan 12th, 2016 on Criminal Law - Washington
More details to this question:
I have a friend who just recently turned 18. Him and another guy who is 17 got caught smoking weed a couple nights ago by the cops. The cops didn't take him to jail, and his friend didn't get in trouble at all, just a call to his mom to come pick him up. The cops wrote my friend up and told him he'd receive a letter within 15 days on when his court date will be. He's freaking out, doesn't know what to do and doesn't know what to tell his parents.

You will get a court summons to appear at your arrangement where the charges against you will be read into the record. If there is a diversion program take it. Otherwise, you will have about 6 weeks before your pretrial hearing. During this period, you will be trying to work a plea deal with the prosecutor. Your attorney can try to get you a Stipulated Order of Continuance or deferred sentence. Your sentence will likely be a drug and alcohol evaluation and treatment if necessary. You will have to pay a fine and do community service. You will also be on probation for one year. Any background check will find the drug offense on your record. This will impact you getting an apartment, job or loan.
