What would be my options and consequences for a petty theft?

More details to this question:
I had a petty misdemeanor theft when I first turned 17-18 not sure but I was put in a diversion court that case was dropped or not convicted. When I turned 19, I made a dumb mistake of shoplifting with some friends that were underage. Their charges were dropped. The merchandise was worth up to $225. I was cited but found out I have to appear in court. I am very afraid. I have truly learned my lesson. I pray I have no jail time.
It's not a petty theft. It's a misdemeanor crime. All thefts start out at a minimum of misdemeanor level. I recommend that you retain a lawyer to help you through this case. Even though you are required to appear in court, your lawyer will still try to do something to keep this crime off of your criminal record and keep you out of jail.
