My cousin was driving my father’s car and got a DUI along with the car getting impounded. They want my dad to pay $2170.00 to get it out even though he was not the one driving. I know he can say he didn't authorize him to drive the car which would get my cousin into a lot more trouble but dad doesn't want to do that to him. Is there any way around this? Fortunately, I still have the key to the car. What am I risking if I get caught? I don't know if this is of any help to me or if it’s a bad thing, but I also took the cars registration out and the proof of insurance.
You are risking criminal prosecution. Your dad cannot cover up for his nephew AND avoid paying the tow/storage fees, though there can always be a review of the reasonableness of those fees.
