QUESTION

What's the worst that will happen to me?

Asked on Nov 11th, 2013 on Criminal Law - Michigan
More details to this question:
I have been getting food stamps and insurance through the state I live in for over 6 years. The last 2 years, I haven't been truthful about my living situation, but have been truthful about all jobs and changes in our income. I was wondering what would happen if I came out and told them.

See an attorney first, if it is determined that you have been receiving unwarranted funds from the state they will insist on repayment, and could even undertake criminal prosecution. Fix it now.

They could report the matter to the authorities and decide to charge you with a crime. Or, they could decide to forego criminal charges if you just pay back what you owe them that was fraudulently obtained. You are facing the possibility of being criminally charged so I would strongly suggest you consult with an experienced criminal defense attorney in your area before you decide what to do.
