The short answer is, it's too late when the judge says so. The longer answer is that a judge may or may not give you more time for your case if you hire a new attorney. Depending on your case, a new attorney might need more time, but it is also possible that a month is enough time to prepare for the motion to suppress. See a new attorney as soon as possible to discuss the specifics of your case.
The sooner the better. If the case has not been continued yet by the defense and there is at least a week prior to a contested hearing, usually the court will grant a continuance for new counsel. If counsel can be hired in time to be ready for the next hearing without a continuance, then there is no issue at all. You can hire whom you want, when you want.
